Backward compatibility or sometimes referred to as its verb counterpart, backward compatible, is a term used to describe products, devices, and accessories, including cables and connectors, which have the ability to interact, connect and transfer data or power (depending on the specification) with devices and accessories for a device or accessory from a previous generation or a previous series of products.
The antonym, forward compatibility refers to the ability to connect and transfer with devices and accessories of a future generation.
