Forward compatibility or sometimes referred to as its verb counterpart, forward compatible, is a term used to describe products, devices, and accessories, including cables and connectors, which have the ability to interact, connect and transfer data or power (depending on the specification) with devices and accessories for a future product.

The antonym, backward compatibility refers to the ability to connect and transfer with devices and accessories of a previous generation or a previous series of products.
