Multi-factor authentication, occasionally shortened to MFA, is a method of identity verification. Multi-factor authentication refers to using multiple authentication factors. Authentication factors are methods that can be used to confirm a person’s identity.

Multi-factor authentication, includes any authentication method that uses at least 2 factors, including, obviously, two-factor authentication. They can be comprised of any combination of authentication methods allowing for almost infinite combinations. While not immune to social engineering and hacking, multi-factor authentication dramatically reduces the risk of an account getting compromised. Multi-factor authentication has been circumvented and broken, usually through a combination of hacking and social engineering hacking.
