An eSIM or otherwise known as an embedded SIM, is an electronic, embedded version of the physical SIM card. It is designed as a replacement for the SIM card. Unlike its physical counterpart, the eSIM is re-programmable at any time, meaning there is no need to switch out the SIM card every time. Instead of switching out a physical card, with the eSIM, anyone is able to switch carriers by either opening an app on their phone or scanning a QR code.
